Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has launched the construction of the Giathenge–Ichamama–Witima–Kiuguini road in Othaya Constituency, Nyeri County, in a move aimed at improving rural connectivity and supporting agricultural trade.
The road is expected to ease the transportation of farm produce to markets while providing traders and residents with safer, faster and more reliable transport services.
Speaking during the launch in Giathenge on Monday, October 12, 2026, Kindiki said continued investment in road infrastructure was critical to promoting rural development and reducing poverty by improving access to economic opportunities.
The project is expected to strengthen links between farming areas and markets, helping agricultural producers move their goods more efficiently while reducing transport challenges that can affect rural businesses.

Kindiki noted that improved road networks play an important role in unlocking the agricultural potential of Othaya and neighbouring areas, where farming remains a key economic activity.
Better rural roads can also improve access to essential services and connect communities to trading centres, supporting the movement of people and goods.
The launch formed part of the Deputy President’s development engagements in Nyeri County, where he also addressed residents on ongoing infrastructure, healthcare, electricity connectivity and housing projects.
Kindiki was accompanied by Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga, Othaya MP Wambugu Wainaina, Nyeri Town MP Duncan Mathenge and Kieni MP Njoroge Wainaina.
Other leaders present included Principal Secretary for Energy Alex Wachira, Principal Secretary for East African Community Affairs Dr Carol Karugu, Principal Secretary for Sports Elijah Mwangi, Members of County Assembly and other local leaders.
