IPOA, DCI Launch Investigations into Solai Police Custody Death

By Royford Kirimi

Authorities in Nakuru County have launched investigations into the mysterious death of a boda boda rider who allegedly died while in police custody at Solai Police Post in Rongai Sub-county.

The deceased, identified by relatives as Erick Kiptanui Koros, was reportedly arrested on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, following a dispute involving KSh 8,000.

According to family members, police officers arrived at his home and asked him to accompany them to the station over the complaint. They say Koros appeared calm and in good health before leaving.

Barely thirty minutes after his arrival, police informed the family that Koros had been found dead inside a cell. Officers claimed that the 40-year-old rider had taken his own life using a piece of a duvet — an explanation the family has strongly disputed.

Speaking to the media, relatives described Koros as a hardworking and cheerful man with no history of depression or suicidal tendencies. “How could he die so soon after being detained?” one family member questioned, calling for a thorough and independent probe into the matter.

The body was transferred to Nakuru City Mortuary pending a post-mortem examination. The Independent Policing and Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Rongai have taken over the inquiry.

Local boda boda operators and residents have condemned the incident, demanding accountability from the police and justice for the bereaved family. They also urged the government to enforce stricter measures to safeguard the rights and welfare of suspects in custody.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
