The Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, on Monday led Kenyans in marking the 2025 Mazingira Day celebrations held at Ngiriambu Comprehensive Primary School in Kirinyaga County.
The event brought together government officials, local leaders, students, and community members in a tree-growing exercise aimed at promoting environmental conservation and sustainability.
This year’s celebrations were themed “Citizen-Centric Tree Growing and Environmental Stewardship,” emphasizing the role of individuals and communities in restoring forest cover and protecting the environment.
Speaking during the event, PS Muthoni urged Kenyans to actively participate in the TurudiPrimo campaign, a national initiative encouraging citizens to return to their former primary schools to plant or donate fruit trees.
She explained that the initiative goes beyond tree planting, aiming to instill a sense of ownership, pride, and environmental responsibility among communities.“Let’s go back to where our journeys began. Let’s give back by planting fruit trees that will feed future generations and nurture the environment,” said Muthoni.
The PS noted that the campaign aligns with the government’s goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032 to achieve 30 percent national tree cover. She added that fruit trees not only enhance food and nutrition security but also build climate resilience.
Students and residents of Ngiriambu joined government officials in planting hundreds of fruit and indigenous trees within the school compound and nearby community spaces.
Mazingira Day, celebrated annually across the country, serves as a reminder of the shared responsibility to safeguard the environment. The 2025 theme encapsulates this spirit of unity and action: “Together we plant, together we grow, and together we build the future we want.”
