71 Million Fruit Seedlings Targeted as Kenya Marks Mazingira Day 2025

Kenya is preparing to mark Mazingira Day 2025 on October 10, with a nationwide campaign urging citizens to plant fruit trees and clean their environments under the theme “Citizen-Centric Tree Growing and Environmental Stewardship.”

The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry says this year’s focus on fruit trees is deliberate—linking environmental restoration with food security, education, and livelihoods.

“This year, we call on all Kenyans to return to their primary schools under the rallying cry #TurudiPrimoTukadonateFruitTrees na KucleanEnvironment,” said the Principal Secretary for Forestry. “Let us donate fruit trees, plant together with learners, and clean our surroundings, leaving a legacy for generations to come.”

The national event will be held at Kabuyefwe Primary School and Kabuyefwe Boys in Trans-Nzoia County, where more than 10,000 fruit trees will be planted. Simultaneous activities will take place in over 9,000 schools across the country, with support from government officials, alumni, and local communities.

The national target is ambitious: 71.14 million seedlings in 35,570 schools, with each school planting at least 2,000 trees. Where space is limited, seedlings will be given to learners to plant at home.

Mazingira Day complements other national clean-up and climate initiatives and aligns with Kenya’s 15 Billion Tree Growing Programme, which seeks to achieve 30% tree cover by 2032.

Ahead of the day, Kenyans are encouraged to donate fruit trees, join clean-up campaigns, and mentor learners between October 3–9, 2025.
