Economic Freedom Fighters Decry “Escalating Authoritarianism” in Kenya

During the recent protests held on June 25 to commemorate the deaths of fallen heroes from the previous year’s June 2024 demonstrations, the youth took to the streets to peacefully demonstrate, as they have consistently done.

There was live coverage of the protest from multiple Tv stations. According to EFF(Economic Freedom Fighters) party the recent protest on June 25th was similarly deadly.

EFF condemned the Kenyan Government, calling it “brutal repression” and “censorship of independent media”.

In a statement released Wednesday, the EFF condemned what it termed as escalating authoritarianism, suppression of dissent, and violence targeting peaceful demonstrators marking the anniversary of last year’s deadly anti-Finance Bill protests.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) denounces in the strongest possible terms the violent crackdown on peaceful demonstrators and the suppression of independent media.

These protests, mainly organized by young people, mark the anniversary of the June 25, 2024 demonstrations, during which more than 60 individuals were reported killed. In this year alone, 15 people have been reported killed so far, with over 400 injured.

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) had given an order to all media houses to stop coverage of media, a move that was later overturned by the High court. This failed attempt to silence the media may have revealed something about the government.
