Engineers Tee Off at Ruiru Sports Club to Support Student Sponsorships

The Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) hosted its first-ever golf tournament at the Ruiru Sports Club, bringing together more than 250 engineers in a landmark event that blended sport with mentorship and professional growth.

The tournament, which aimed to raise funds for student membership sponsorships, highlighted the engineering fraternity’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of professionals.

Electrical engineer Eng. Titus Koech, who participated in the tournament, said the initiative was a powerful reminder of the role engineers play beyond their technical work.

“As engineers, our responsibility goes beyond infrastructure—we are here to support social and economic development as well. By sponsoring student engineers, we inspire them to become the future leaders of the profession,” he said.

The sponsorship drive is part of IEK’s broader agenda to promote mentorship, career transition, and professional development for young engineers. With agreements already established with engineering schools, the institution hopes to reach thousands of students annually.

Koech encouraged students to seize the opportunity, stressing the importance of professional membership.

“Joining IEK is critical in preparing for the journey from graduate engineer to consultant and professional engineer. It is the best way to be nurtured into leadership,” he advised.

The event was co-sponsored by major corporations including Kenya Pipeline, Galana Energies, and Davis & Shatliff, with the Ruiru Sports Club providing the venue for what many participants hope will become an annual tradition.

Club Captain Justus Mathenge praised the event as a celebration of both sport and service.

“This is about engineers coming together to shape Kenya’s future. We are delighted to host them and look forward to welcoming them every year,” he said.
