Former Ichagaki Ward MCA, Hon. Charles Mwangi, has officially announced his intention to contest for the Murang’a County senatorial seat in the 2027 general election, setting up a direct challenge against the incumbent Senator Joe Nyutu of the DCP Party.
Dr. Mwangi, who served as Ichagaki Ward MCA from 2017 to 2022, is currently a lecturer at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). Before joining academia, he was actively involved in county politics and legislative work, earning a reputation for championing community development initiatives in his ward.
He is also remembered for a remarkable act of public service during the COVID-19 pandemic: in 2020, he donated his entire April MCA salary to the Covid-19 Emergency Response Fund, becoming one of the few elected leaders to make such a contribution in the fight against the virus. Observers say this gesture reflects his commitment to serving the people above personal gain.
Speaking during an interview, Dr. Mwangi emphasized his commitment to youth empowerment, education, and local economic development, citing his experience in both governance and academia as key strengths.

“I believe Murang’a needs leadership that combines practical governance experience with a forward-looking vision. My time in the ward office taught me the value of listening to the people, while my work in academia has sharpened my problem-solving skills,” he said.
Dr. Mwangi also praised the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and President William Ruto for their role in shaping Kenya’s economic and political landscape.
“I am proud to join the United Democratic Alliance, a party that has consistently championed the interests of ordinary Kenyans. Under President William Ruto’s leadership, we have seen renewed focus on economic empowerment, support for local businesses, and programs that put the youth at the center of development,” he noted.
He described UDA as the party of action and delivery, promising that his candidacy will align with the party’s vision for equitable development, job creation, and national unity.
Political analysts say Dr. Mwangi’s entry introduces a competitive dynamic in Murang’a County, particularly as UDA seeks to expand its influence in Central Kenya ahead of the 2027 elections. His campaign is expected to focus on bottom-up participation, leveraging both his grassroots political experience and academic credentials.
“I am committed to working closely with all stakeholders in Murang’a, and I believe that together with UDA, we can build a county that is prosperous, inclusive, and forward-looking,” he said.
