Hotpoint, Britam & MIC to Offer Seamless Embedded Insurance on Appliances

Appliances

Customers buying home appliances from Hotpoint Appliances will now be covered against accidental damage, power surges, fire and water damage, transit loss, theft and burglary, and political violence & terrorism for twelve months thirty minutes from the day of purchase.

This is after Hot Appliance signed an agreement with Britam General Insurance and MIC Global Risks to provide an All-Risks insurance cover on select appliances purchased at Hotpoint outlets nationwide and online.

This cover, valid for 12 months from the date of purchase, provides customers with automatic insurance protection at no extra cost, activated the moment an eligible appliance is purchased.

Eligible products include refrigerators, freezers, televisions, selected audio equipment, laundry and dishwashers, cookers (excluding table-tops), and room air conditioners.

The partnership also includes a repair-or-replace guarantee, ensuring quick restoration or replacement of damaged items. Customers will receive a digital insurance certificate upon checkout, with claims processed through Britam’s digital claims portal.

Speaking during the partnership announcement, Britam General Insurance CEO & Principal Officer James Mbithi,  noted that the partnership supports Britam’s 2025 strategy of driving insurance penetration through digital-first, lifestyle-centred solutions.

He noted that political violence and terrorism have been included in the cover after customers raised concerns of their appliances being destroyed during political demos.

“Most consumers do not proactively purchase insurance for their household appliances, yet these items are increasingly essential to day-to-day living. By embedding cover into the purchase journey, we are meeting customers where they are and making protection accessible, seamless and relevant,” Mbithi said.

This is even as Hotpoint Appliances CEO, Ravi Kanani, said the partnership underscores the company’s commitment to enhancing customer value beyond providing high-quality appliances.

“The partnership with Britam & MIC reflects our commitment to delivering not just quality products, but meaningful value and protection long after purchase. By offering automatic insurance cover at no additional cost, we are elevating the customer experience and ensuring they enjoy complete confidence in every appliance they bring home,” he said.

On his part, Chief Operations Officer and Principal Officer, MIC Global Risks Puneet Chawla said the partnership reflects their commitment to delivering innovative insurance solutions that meet the evolving needs of Kenyan households.

“By working with Britam and Hotpoint, we are making protection accessible and effortless, enabling customers to enjoy peace of mind from the moment they purchase their appliances, from their trusted retailer, Hotpoint.

The collaboration comes at a time when household electronics account for a rapidly rising share of middle-class spending, driven by urbanization, increased mortgage uptake, and the expansion of Kenya’s domestic appliance market.

According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) 2025 Economic Outlook, Kenya’s household appliance and consumer electronics market is projected to grow by 11.4 per cent in 2025, propelled by increased disposable incomes and the resurgence of consumer confidence amid easing inflation.

With more than 40 per cent of urban households in Kenya now owning at least one major appliance, a figure expected to surpass 55per cent by 2027 as per the 2025 Consumer Electronics and Household Report by Research ICT Africa, the need for affordable protection mechanisms has never been greater.
