Kenya Advances Blue Economy Agenda at Global Maritime Talks in London

Kenya is intensifying efforts to strengthen its maritime sector, Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho said during a government address at the International Maritime Organization in London.

Joho highlighted the importance of building a maritime sector that is safe, secure and sustainable, stressing that the blue economy is a key driver of Kenya’s long-term growth and job creation.

“By embracing innovation, technology and international partnerships, Kenya can develop a resilient maritime sector that benefits our economy, protects the environment and safeguards our waters,” he said.

The CS also used the occasion to campaign for Kenya’s reelection to the IMO Council under Category C, emphasizing that continued membership would enable the country to influence global maritime policies and standards.

Joho later met Morocco’s Minister of Transport, where the two discussed collaboration on maritime safety, capacity building and technology transfer. Such partnerships, he said, are essential for strengthening Kenya’s maritime capabilities and advancing the blue economy.

He was accompanied by Kenya’s High Commissioner to London, Ambassador Catherine Kirumba, and the Director General of the Kenya Maritime Authority, CPA Omae Nyarandi.

“Our focus is clear: we want to grow Kenya’s blue economy, protect our maritime interests, and ensure that every policy and initiative supports innovation, sustainability and economic growth,” Joho said.
