Kenya Flags Off 188-Member Team for Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

Kenya has officially flagged off a 188-member delegation to represent the country at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, as athletes prepare to compete on one of the world’s biggest multi-sport stages.

The team, comprising athletes, coaches and technical officials, was presented with the Kenyan flag during a ceremony led by Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Salim Mvurya ahead of the Games, which begin on 23 July.

Kenya will be seeking to build on its rich Commonwealth Games legacy, particularly in athletics, while also competing in boxing, swimming, para-sports and other disciplines.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, Mvurya urged the athletes to compete with discipline, determination and integrity while proudly representing the nation.

“This morning, a delegation of 188, comprising athletes, coaches and technical officials, was flagged off to represent Kenya at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games,” Mvurya said in a statement shared on his official X account.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting Team Kenya throughout the competition, saying adequate preparations had been made to give the athletes the best chance of success.

The delegation features a mix of seasoned champions, emerging talents and para-athletes who have undergone months of intensive training.

Athletics is once again expected to spearhead Kenya’s medal hunt, with the country aiming to maintain its dominance in middle- and long-distance events while improving performances in other sports.

Mvurya said the athletes are not only competitors but also ambassadors of Kenya and urged them to uphold sportsmanship, respect and national pride throughout the Games.

He added that the team’s performances would inspire millions of young Kenyans pursuing careers in sports while showcasing the country’s talent and resilience on the global stage.

Government officials, sports administrators, coaches, family members and supporters attended the flag-off ceremony to wish the team success before its departure for Scotland.

Kenya heads to Glasgow with high expectations, having consistently ranked among Africa’s top-performing nations at previous Commonwealth Games, particularly in athletics.
