Kenya Red Cross Bungoma Launches Tournament To Combat GBV

By Isabella Maua

In honor of “16 Days of Activism Against GBV,” Kenya Red Cross Bungoma has launched friendly football competitions to combat gender-based violence throughout the nation.

During a colorful launch at Kaptalelio Primary School in Kaptama, Mt. Elgon Sub- County, youths came in large numbers to participate in the friendly match that was between Chemoge Florida FC and Chepkwaya FC.

Rose Chemos, Mt Elgon focal person for Kenya Red Cross Bungoma, challenged the youths to not only be champions in the field but also advocate for a violent -free society.

“We are all aware that Mt. Elgon is among the top-most affected areas in Kenya when it comes to GBV; changing this narrative starts with you from here to your homes, schools, and everywhere you will be during this festive season,” she advised.

Richard Ndiwa, the area chief for Chemoge, condemned domestic violence and recommended the youths to act with love towards their partners despite technologically facilitated violence, which has become rampant lately.

“Please use your phones diligently and avoid checking your spouse’s private conversations since this will definitely lead to fights and sometimes fatal incidents,” Ndiwa warned.

Hosea Cheptoek, the Chemoge Florida FC coach, lauded the Kenya Red Cross for the bold initiative to hold the tournament in their home area and promised they will continue to champion for peaceful co-existence.

“This region has been notorious for all kinds of violence, and we can never thank you enough for remembering us during this critical festive season. We pledge to work together with other whistleblowers to point out any cases of GBV,” he vowed.

One of the players could not hide his joy to be part of the active fight against GBV, and he promised to spread the gospel back home.

“Today I am happy that I am not only playing and showing my skills but I’m also protecting my brothers and sisters from gender-based violence. I am a champion!” said David Kibet, a 22-year-old player.

Christine Tekei, the Assistant Chief for Kaptalelio, cautioned the young men to keep off school going and underage girls.

“The law is very stringent nowadays; avoid imprisonment and protect our young girls since they are vulnerable. For those of you who are married, love your wives and don’t practice domestic violence,” advised Tekei.

The friendly match ended with Chepkwaya FC beating Chemoge Florida FC 2-1.

Both teams were gifted a ball to enable them to practice and widely spread the message against gender-based violence.
