Former party leader Irungu Nyakera has strongly condemned the removal of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from office, saying it amounted to a betrayal of the Kenyan people who democratically elected him during the August 8, 2022 General Election.
In a strongly worded statement issued Monday, Nyakera argued that Gachagua’s ouster undermined the will of millions of voters who chose the former Mathira MP as Deputy President under the Kenya Kwanza Alliance ticket.
“H.E. Rigathi Gachagua was duly and democratically elected on August 8, 2022. His removal from office therefore subverted the sovereign will of the Kenyan people who elected him,” Nyakera said.
The statement comes days after the Court of Appeal ruled that the bench which heard Gachagua’s impeachment case had been unlawfully constituted, thereby rendering the process unconstitutional.
The court directed that the matter be reheard by a properly empaneled bench and reaffirmed the stay orders issued earlier by the Kerugoya High Court, meaning Gachagua remains Deputy President for now.
Nyakera emphasized that respect for the Constitution and electoral outcomes is essential for Kenya’s democratic stability, warning against what he termed “judicial and political machinations” aimed at overturning legitimate electoral mandates.
