Nyakera Raises Alarm Over Foreign Nationals Registering as Voters in Nairobi

Democrats for the Citizen Party Nairobi Patron Irungu Nyakera has expressed concern over reports that some foreign nationals are allegedly attempting to register as voters in Nairobi.

In a statement posted on his social media pages, Nyakera said he has toured several registration centres across the city since the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) opened the voter registration exercise on September 29.

He revealed that a number of registration clerks had raised alarms about Burundian, Ethiopian, and Ugandan nationals reportedly presenting Kenyan identification cards in a bid to register as voters.

Nyakera described the reports as deeply troubling, warning that such actions could undermine the integrity of Kenya’s voter register, which he termed as the cornerstone of the country’s democracy.

He insisted that only duly verified Kenyan citizens should be issued with national identification cards and allowed to register as voters.

“The credibility of our voter register is a cornerstone of our democracy,” he said, cautioning that infiltration by non-citizens could compromise the fairness of future elections.

Nyakera further urged IEBC clerks to stay alert and report any irregularities they notice — even through social media — to enable prompt investigation and action by relevant authorities.

He also called on the IEBC and the National Registration Bureau to strengthen verification systems at registration points to ensure that only legitimate Kenyan citizens are enlisted, saying that protecting the voter register is essential to preserving Kenya’s sovereignty and democratic future.
