Nyaribo Impeachment Sparks Fresh Factional Wars in Nyamira Assembly

Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo’s impeachment has reopened deep political wounds in a County Assembly long plagued by factional wars, power struggles, and shifting alliances.

Although 23 MCAs declared him ousted on Tuesday, the vote has reignited concerns about the stability of Nyamira’s political leadership—coming barely months after the Assembly emerged from a prolonged period of internal chaos.

Speaker Thadeus Nyabaro’s decision to allow six MCAs to vote on behalf of absent colleagues has especially revived old suspicions over manipulation and political maneuvering within the House. The move effectively delivered the number required to push the matter to the Senate, but it also exposed underlying tensions.

For months, the Assembly has been a battleground for rival MCAs seeking control of committee leadership, budget processes, and political influence ahead of the 2027 polls. Nyaribo’s opponents argue that he has marginalized certain factions and exercised excessive control over county affairs, while his allies dismiss the impeachment as a coordinated attempt to capture the county’s executive power.

“This is not about service delivery—it is about political supremacy,” said a senior county official familiar with the internal wrangles.

The governor’s legal team now plans to challenge the impeachment at the Senate, citing technical inconsistencies similar to those that led to the dismissal of cases against Isiolo’s Abdi Guyo and Kericho’s Eric Mutai.

Nyaribo’s troubles are not new. Since 2023, Nyamira politics has been marked by dramatic scenes including parallel Assembly sittings, court cases, and leadership disputes. At one point, a faction allied to ousted speaker Enock Okero held sessions outside the chambers under the rallying call Bunge Mashinani, symbolizing the deep institutional divide.

While courts eventually restored order, the unity was fragile. Tuesday’s impeachment has now thrust Nyamira back into uncertainty, with MCAs again split between pro- and anti-Nyaribo blocs.

With three by-elections pending, both sides are keenly aware that the Assembly’s balance of power could shift at any moment. The impeachment may therefore be just the opening act in a wider battle for county control as political temperatures rise toward 2027.

The Senate’s next move will determine not only Nyaribo’s fate but also whether Nyamira can break free from its cycle of political turmoil—or sink deeper into factional conflict.
