Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni has lauded the role of Community Health Promoters (CHPs) in advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC), saying they are bringing essential services closer to households and strengthening primary healthcare delivery.
Speaking on Saturday during a public engagement forum at Kangaru Boys High School in Embu, Muthoni said the initiative has been greatly boosted by President William Ruto’s administration through training and timely payments of the health promoters.
“Community Health Promoters remain the backbone of our UHC agenda. By reaching households directly, they are bridging the gap in access to healthcare. With the support of President Ruto, we have ensured they are well-trained and compensated on time,” she said.
Embu County is among the regions leading in UHC uptake, with 55 percent of residents already registered under the Social Health Authority (SHA), guaranteeing access to free healthcare in Levels 2, 3, and 4 facilities.
Recruitment of additional nurses and doctors is ongoing to ensure all hospitals are fully staffed, while four Level 4 hospitals are undergoing renovation. The county has also strengthened service delivery through consistent restocking of medicines.
Beyond healthcare, Muthoni highlighted government investments in new markets, the establishment of an industrial park, and improved road infrastructure, which she said are fostering inclusive economic growth in the region.
Governor Cecily Mbarire and other Mt. Kenya leaders who attended the forum reaffirmed their commitment to better healthcare and sustainable development for the people of Embu.
