The Nairobi West Hospital Ruiru branch has recorded a major medical breakthrough with the successful performance of advanced bronchoscopy procedures that have not only saved lives but also reinforced the hospital’s growing reputation in delivering specialized care.
Led by Dr. Yassar Najiagdam, a seasoned medical expert in respiratory interventions, the hospital recently conducted a bronchoscopy on a 12-year-old female patient who had been admitted following a severe road accident.
The child suffered a traumatic head injury and, in the chaos of the accident, aspirated several of her teeth into her respiratory tract—specifically lodging in the RB 5 bronchial segment.
This kind of foreign body aspiration is a critical medical emergency, posing immediate danger to the patient’s breathing and overall stability.
Dr. Najiagdam and his team acted swiftly, utilizing a flexible bronchoscope equipped with a 1.4mm channel basket to locate and extract the aspirated teeth.
The procedure was conducted under general anesthesia, ensuring the young patient remained still and pain-free throughout.
The intervention was a complete success, and the patient has since been reported to be in stable condition with a promising recovery trajectory.
The child’s mother expressed profound gratitude, saying, “I was terrified when I heard about my daughter’s condition. But Dr. Yassar and his team gave us hope and reassurance. The way they explained the procedure and the confidence they showed calmed us down. Today, my daughter is alive and breathing because of them.”
In another significant case, the hospital attended to a 56-year-old woman who had a long history of smoking, having quit five years ago after three decades of tobacco use.
She presented with a chronic cough and significant weight loss that had persisted for over six months. Alarmed by her symptoms, physicians conducted a chest X-ray and a CT scan which revealed a suspicious nodule in the right lower lobe of her lung, along with enlarged lymph nodes—indicators often associated with malignancy.
Given her family history of lung cancer, the team opted for a bronchoscopy to collect tissue samples and further examine the abnormalities. Using a bronchoscope under general anesthesia, tissue was successfully collected from the right mediastinal area, enabling more precise diagnostic assessment.
The procedure was smooth, and initial findings have offered the medical team a clear path for treatment planning. The patient, relieved to finally have clarity, said, “I finally feel like someone is taking my health seriously. I’m thankful for the care and skill shown here. Now I can focus on treatment and getting better.”
These bronchoscopy procedures are part of a broader effort by The Nairobi West Hospital to enhance its advanced diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities. Bronchoscopy is an essential tool in pulmonary medicine, used to visualize the inside of the airways, collect biopsy samples, and remove foreign objects.
The procedure, often done under local or general anesthesia depending on the case, has significantly evolved in safety and precision.
In addition to bronchoscopy, the hospital has reached other important milestones. The Ruiru branch has successfully performed Premcath procedures, which are vital in managing complex cardiovascular conditions by enabling effective catheterization.
It has also facilitated the implantation of chemotherapy ports, improving the experience of cancer patients by offering a reliable and less painful method of chemotherapy delivery.
Furthermore, the hospital is proficient in the insertion of Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) lines, crucial for patients needing long-term intravenous treatment.
As The Nairobi West Hospital continues to expand its reach and capability, its Ruiru branch stands as a beacon of excellence in clinical care, offering specialized procedures previously inaccessible to many in the region.
The recent bronchoscopy cases are a testament to its dedication to saving lives through innovation and medical precision.
