Irungu Nyakera , DCP party Patron, Nairobi County has condemned the government’s move to cancel the Democrats for the Citizen party’s venue booking at Kasarani Grounds.
He termed the cancellation of the venue as a “direct assault on constitutionalism, the rule of law, and democratic space in Kenya.”
In a strongly-worded statement issued on Tuesday, Nyakera accused the government of political sabotage after Sports Kenya revoked a previously confirmed and paid-for reservation of Kasarani for the official DCP launch scheduled for June 3rd.
“The government’s decision to cancel the DCP’s venue booking at Kasarani is a direct assault on constitutionalism, the rule of law, and democratic space in Kenya. The letters from Sports Kenya reveal the sheer contempt for legal process, as the venue was first offered, then paid for, and subsequently denied on flimsy and suspicious grounds. This is not just venue politics, it is political sabotage that sets a dangerous precedent for authoritarian rule.” he said.
The former gubernatorial aspirant urged the state to reconsider what he termed as an unconstitutional action, calling for the respect of Kenyans’ right to peaceful assembly and political participation.
Despite the setback, Nyakera maintained that the DCP launch will proceed as planned, with an alternative venue already considered should Kasarani be inaccessible.
“The DCP Party launch remains set for 3rd June at Kasarani Grounds. Should the gates be locked, we shall hold it on Thika Road. Come prepared. Come in comfortable shoes.,” he said.
