Githunguri Member of Parliament, Gathoni wa Wamuchomba, has officially distanced herself from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s political camp—just hours before the launch of his new party, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).

Instead, she has thrown her weight behind former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i, following a visit to his residence.

Wamuchomba’s absence from Gachagua’s recent political events had already raised eyebrows. Once a regular at his meetings—especially following his impeachment—her silence had been increasingly notable.

Gathoni Wamuchomba claims Gachagua partially contributed to his impeachment: "Was off key"

In a media interview on March 24, 2025, Wamuchomba urged Gachagua to shift from a regional focus to a more inclusive national agenda. She emphasized the need for him to become a unifying leader, not just a Mount Kenya spokesperson.

“He doesn’t have to agree with me, but facts are facts. Rigathi already has the mountain behind him. He doesn’t need to keep punching the same message,” she said. “The same energy he used to defend the mountain should be used to advocate for displaced people in other regions and forgotten communities across Kenya.”

Wamuchomba further argued that Gachagua contributed to his own political downfall. “During his two years in office, his conduct failed to win over many MPs.

He was too abrasive, his language was off-key, and at times, his behavior was simply unacceptable,” she noted.

In another interview with a local TV station, Wamuchomba addressed speculation about whether she would join Gachagua’s new party. She responded cautiously, stating that her political decisions would be based on alignment with her principles and vision for the country.

“I have my own views on Wamunyoro,” she said. “I’ll support whoever embraces my values and expectations for the next government.”
