2027 Election: Latest Political Developments in Kenya

Kenya’s political landscape is entering a more intense phase ahead of the 2027 General Election, with President William Ruto’s re-election bid facing an increasingly active opposition and new political alliances taking shape across the country.

The latest developments have largely centred on the opposition’s efforts to unite behind a single presidential candidate, growing competition for influence in the Mt Kenya region and preparations for the next election.

Ruto Faces Intensifying Opposition Challenge

President William Ruto has maintained confidence in his re-election prospects as opposition leaders step up their campaigns across the country.

Ruto recently said he was not worried about his political rivals, maintaining that voters would distinguish between political slogans and leaders with clear plans for the country.

At the same time, political competition within Ruto’s camp and among regional blocs is becoming increasingly visible as leaders position themselves ahead of 2027. A recent analysis by Daily Nation highlighted growing succession rivalries and regional political competition within the President’s camp.

Ndindi Nyoro Moves to Opposition

One of the biggest political developments in recent weeks has been the decision by Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro to leave the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and take over the People’s Party of Kenya (PPK).

Nyoro has declared his intention to work with opposition leaders to challenge Ruto in 2027, marking a major shift from his previous position as one of the President’s prominent allies in the Mt Kenya region.

The Kiharu MP has said he is prepared to support whichever candidate the opposition eventually chooses to represent the broader alliance.

“If the opposition says I will be the flag bearer, I will accept. If they front another candidate, we will also support and we will work together.”

Nyoro has also called on opposition leaders to settle on one presidential candidate and running mate ahead of the election campaign.

Mt Kenya Emerges as Key Political Battleground

The Mt Kenya region has become one of the major areas of political competition ahead of 2027.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who leads the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), has been seeking to consolidate his influence in the region while accusing the government of attempting to divide the Mt Kenya vote.

Gachagua has also warned residents against smaller political parties that he claims could fragment the region’s voting bloc.

Nyoro’s entry into the opposition has added another major political player to the contest for Mt Kenya support. His decision has also triggered debate over whether PPK will strengthen the opposition or create another centre of competition in the region.
