Ex-MP Ngunjiri Wambugu Questions Jubilee Leadership Over Aspirant Intimidation

Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has questioned the leadership and internal democracy of the Jubilee Party following allegations that aspirants and party members are being intimidated for visiting the office of Deputy Party Leader Jeremiah Ng’ayu Kioni.

In a statement, Wambugu defended Kioni’s engagement with party aspirants, arguing that the office was established to provide guidance and support to members seeking to participate in the political process ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Wambugu said Kioni had played a significant role in strengthening Jubilee, including campaigning for the party and helping invite former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to consider a presidential bid under its banner.

He expressed concern over what he described as attempts to undermine the Deputy Party Leader’s office, questioning whether those criticising its activities were genuinely committed to strengthening the party.

Wambugu said the office’s operations and legal compliance guidance were intended to help aspirants navigate politics peacefully and in accordance with electoral laws and the party constitution.

He questioned whether party loyalty was increasingly being measured by members’ willingness to criticise one another rather than their contributions to the party’s growth and support for aspirants.

“Who is more Jubilee than the other?” Wambugu posed, raising concerns about divisions within the party and the treatment of members seeking guidance from its leadership.

He also questioned whether the criticism directed at Kioni’s office reflected genuine concerns about Jubilee’s direction or what he described as a hidden agenda that could undermine party unity.

Wambugu warned that internal disagreements could complicate the party’s preparations for the 2027 elections, arguing that aspirants should be free to seek lawful guidance and support without facing intimidation.

“Jubilee belongs to its members, its aspirants, and the people who continue to believe in its ideals,” he said.

He called on party members to prioritise unity, respect for the party constitution and support for aspirants as Jubilee positions itself for the next electoral contest.
