Former Embakasi West Member of Parliament George Theuri has attracted public attention after turning to charcoal vending following his defeat in the 2022 General Election.
Theuri, who served two consecutive terms from 2013 to 2022, lost his seat to Mark Mwenje. Since leaving office, the former legislator has been actively sharing his new business venture on social media, where he is seen selling charcoal to local residents.

In one of his posts, Theuri thanked supporters for promoting his business, writing: “Asanteni sana kwa kupromote hii hustle ya makaa. God awabless sana.”

His posts have triggered a wave of reactions from Kenyans online, with many praising him for embracing hard work. James Munene commented that the former MP had not yet reached his comfort zone, adding that the move demonstrated the value of “kujituma” (hard work).

Another user, Leonard Mumah, described Theuri’s actions as a powerful lesson in self-reliance, saying the former lawmaker was showing Kenyans the importance of seeking livelihoods beyond political office.

Others responded with humour and curiosity. Zoza Zoza asked, “Gunia moja jameni mangapi my guy?” while Phelix Kobonyo jokingly wondered whether women were actually buying the charcoal, commenting, “Sijaona wamama wakinunua makaa.”

Despite the light-hearted banter, many viewed the development as a positive example of dignity in labour and resilience after politics.

Theuri’s transition has reignited debate on life after elective leadership and the need for politicians to plan for sustainable livelihoods once their time in office comes to an end.
