Albert Korir Handed Five-Year Ban in Doping Scandal

Kenyan marathon star Albert Korir has been banned from competition for five years after admitting to a doping violation, in a case that has once again cast a spotlight on integrity issues in long-distance running.

The sanction was issued by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), following an investigation that confirmed Korir’s use of a prohibited performance-enhancing substance. The ban, which began in January 2026, will keep the 31-year-old out of the sport during what would typically be the peak years of a marathoner’s career.

Korir tested positive for CERA (Continuous Erythropoietin Receptor Activator), a synthetic drug designed to boost endurance by increasing red blood cell production. The substance, a form of EPO, is strictly banned in athletics due to its performance-enhancing effects. The positive result came from out-of-competition testing, a system designed to catch athletes outside of race day conditions. After being provisionally suspended earlier in the year, Korir later admitted to the violation, leading to the final ruling by the AIU.

As part of the punishment, all of Korir’s results from October 2025 onward have been disqualified. This includes the loss of titles, prize money, and official standings earned during that period, significantly impacting his professional record.

Korir rose to international prominence after winning the New York City Marathon in 2021, one of the most prestigious races in the world. Known for his consistency and strong finishes, he had established himself as one of Kenya’s leading marathoners on the global stage. However, the five-year ban now puts his future in serious doubt, as he will be well into his mid-30s by the time he is eligible to return to competition.

His case is the latest in a growing list of doping violations involving Kenyan athletes. The country, renowned for its dominance in long-distance running, has faced increasing scrutiny from international bodies over the number of athletes sanctioned in recent years. Authorities have responded with stricter testing protocols and education programs, but high-profile cases like this continue to raise concerns about the effectiveness of current measures.
