Ambassador Ababu Namwamba, EGH, Kenya’s envoy to the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) and UNEP, has led efforts to restore and protect Port Victoria Forest Station, a 601.6-hectare conservation area in Bunyala Sub-County.
The forest, managed by the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), covers the four hills of Mumbaka, Wanga, Namuluku, and Nanyungu, and is critical in sustaining the Yala Swamp ecosystem.
This week, Amb. Namwamba visited a section of Mumbaka Hill where he and the local community planted 1,500 trees last year. The initiative also included donating hundreds of fruit tree seedlings to local households.
“Everyone must do more to grow and nurture our environs for our own good and for the good of our children and their children,” said Amb. Namwamba, highlighting Busia’s forest cover, which is below 1%—well under the national average of nearly 10%.
The Ambassador, who has also adopted Arabuko Sokoke Forest, Kwale Mangrove Forest, and Cheptais Forest Block for regeneration, assured that these initiatives will continue under his successor at KMUNEP.
He was accompanied by KFS officers and his office staff during the visit.
