Digital Superhighway Programme on Track as Government Reviews Progress

By Faith Owuor

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to accelerating Kenya’s digital transformation agenda following a high-level progress review meeting on the implementation of the Digital Superhighway Programme, one of the flagship initiatives under the Kenya Kwanza Administration’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.

The meeting, held on Friday at Harambee House, brought together Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, UDA Party Head of Digital Communication Antonella, Principal Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy Eng. John Tanui, former Cabinet Secretary Farida Karoney, and representatives from government agencies leading the programme’s implementation.

The session reviewed milestones achieved in expanding the country’s digital infrastructure, increasing internet connectivity across public institutions, and improving the delivery of government services through digital platforms. Officials also assessed implementation challenges, identified priority areas requiring urgent attention, and agreed on measures to strengthen coordination among implementing agencies.

The Digital Superhighway Programme is a key pillar of the government’s strategy to modernise public service by expanding internet connectivity, establishing digital hubs across the country, and making government services more accessible online. The initiative is also expected to create new opportunities for innovation, investment, entrepreneurship, and employment.

Speaking after the meeting, Antonella said the review reflected the government’s commitment to keeping the programme on schedule.

“This morning, I joined the Head of Public Service, Felix Koskei, at Harambee House for a progress review of the Digital Superhighway Programme. We reviewed the progress made, discussed implementation priorities, and agreed on practical measures to strengthen coordination and keep the programme on course,” she said.

The discussions come as the government continues to invest heavily in digital infrastructure as part of its broader economic transformation strategy.

Felix Koskei has consistently emphasised that effective implementation and close coordination across ministries and government agencies are essential to the successful delivery of national programmes.

“Greater accountability, stronger collaboration across Government and an unwavering focus on execution remain critical if we are to deliver measurable and lasting improvements in the lives and livelihoods of Kenyans,” Koskei said during a recent meeting of Principal Secretaries.

ICT and Digital Economy Principal Secretary Eng. John Tanui also expressed confidence that the programme is making steady progress towards its objectives.

“We are on course. The projects are at different stages of completion, and the momentum is encouraging,” Tanui said during a recent inspection of digital hub projects. He noted that the government plans to establish digital hubs in all 1,450 wards across the country to expand access to digital services, online jobs, and digital entrepreneurship.

The continued review of the programme underscores the government’s determination to keep Kenya’s digital transformation agenda on track. By expanding internet connectivity, digitising public services, and investing in digital infrastructure, the Digital Superhighway Programme is expected to improve service delivery while creating new opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship, and employment, particularly for young people across the country.
