The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested five traffic police officers accused of extorting motorists at a roadblock along the Kisumu–Busia highway, about five kilometres from Busia Town.
The arrests followed complaints from motorists and members of the public reporting persistent bribery and harassment at the checkpoint. According to EACC, the officers routinely demanded cash from drivers entering or leaving the border town, often without conducting lawful checks or enforcing traffic regulations.
The five officers—Corporal Hezron Aburi, Corporal Mary Nabei, Constable James Weru, Constable Mwakwekwe Nyoka, and Constable Aisha Abdullahi—were apprehended during an EACC sting operation.

They were transported to the Commission’s Western Regional Office in Bungoma for questioning before being booked at Bungoma Police Station.
EACC says the operation is part of a wider crackdown on corruption at public service delivery points, with heightened surveillance now targeting high-risk sectors, particularly in transport and border operations.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to curbing bribery and safeguarding the rights of citizens accessing essential services.
