Embakasi North Member of Parliament James Gakuya has claimed that the destruction and looting of businesses during Wednesday’s protests was part of a well-coordinated scheme targeting residents, particularly those from the Mt. Kenya region.
A visibly outraged Gakuya questioned how businesses were torched as security forces watched passively.
“There is no way these attacks just happened. We saw police conducting surveillance from rooftops like KICC, yet they didn’t intervene as thugs looted,” Gakuya said.
He criticized the government’s handling of the unrest, accusing Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen of withholding the truth from Kenyans.
“Murkomen needs to come clean. We are tired of the games he’s playing. He knows who these goons are and who is funding them,” he charged.
The veteran legislator dismissed allegations that the chaos was sponsored by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, stating that the real culprits were being shielded.
“Last week we saw Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja sponsor goons to disrupt protests—what action was taken? None. Let’s stop using Gachagua as a scapegoat,” he added.
Gakuya called on the government to stop the blame games and instead address the genuine grievances being raised by young Kenyans. He said the youth had clear demands and the leadership owed them real engagement, not diversion.
“The government should stop playing mind games and listen to the voices of the youth. These demonstrations are a cry for help, not a political stunt,” Gakuya concluded.
His remarks come amid nationwide protests fueled by economic frustrations and a controversial finance bill, which has triggered outrage, especially among Kenya’s youth.
