Flash Floods Kill 84 as Rivers Overflow in Kisumu County, Tana River County and Uasin Gishu County

Kenya is facing a worsening flood crisis after heavy rains triggered deadly flash floods across several counties, leaving at least 84 people dead and three others missing.

According to the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, the disaster has been caused by rising river levels following days of sustained rainfall, with major rivers bursting their banks and flooding nearby communities.

In Kisumu County, River Nyando has overflowed, submerging homes, farms, and key infrastructure. The worst-hit areas include Kakola, Onjiko, Kochogo, East Kano, Okanja, Kamidumbi, and Panadol, where fast-moving floodwaters have displaced residents and cut off access routes.

Authorities warned that water levels continue to rise, posing further danger to low-lying areas such as Kakola Ombaka and regions near streams including Awach, Agala, Nyalbiego, Chamrogi, and Nyaidho.

In Tana River County, Tana River has also burst its banks, flooding farms and villages, particularly in Asako Village in Mbalambala Location. Meanwhile, in Uasin Gishu County, rising water levels along River Sosiani have led to flooding in residential and commercial areas in Eldoret, including parts of Lower Elgon View.

Multi-agency rescue operations are currently underway, involving the Kenya Red Cross, Kenya Coast Guard Service, and county disaster teams. So far, hundreds of residents have been evacuated and moved to temporary shelters as emergency teams continue search and rescue efforts.

The government has urged residents in affected and high-risk areas to remain vigilant, warning that continued rainfall upstream could worsen the situation and trigger further flooding in the coming days.

The floods have also disrupted transport, education, and livelihoods, with roads rendered impassable, schools affected, and fears rising over possible outbreaks of waterborne diseases.

Authorities say the death toll could rise as rescue and recovery operations continue across the country.
