How Dela Sports Tournament Is Uniting Communities Through Football in Thika

Beyond the goals, trophies and competition, the Dela Sports Tournament is emerging as a powerful force for community unity and talent development in Thika and its surrounding areas.

Now in its third year, the annual football tournament has brought together teams from different parts of Kiambu County, creating a platform where players, fans and local residents can interact, network and celebrate their shared passion for the game.

Founded by sports promoter Patrick Dela, the tournament was established with a vision of using football to strengthen community bonds while providing opportunities for talented players to showcase their abilities.

Speaking during an interview at Newsline Media Studios, Dela said the tournament’s continued growth demonstrates the important role sports can play in bringing people together.

“We started this tournament to bring communities together through football and create a platform where talent can be showcased. Seeing the competition grow every year is something we are very proud of,” he said.

According to Dela, the 2025 edition attracted more than 80 teams, including 16 university sides, making it one of the region’s most successful grassroots football competitions.

This year’s tournament began with preliminary matches held from March 29 to March 31 at TCM Grounds and Del Monte Local 20. Teams from Juja, Makongeni, Gatuanyaga, Kilima Mbogo and Thika participated, highlighting the tournament’s ability to connect communities across the region.

The competition featured Red Lions FC, Destiny Veterans, Pamoja Legends, Kimanza FC, Thika Rangers, Kiambu Elites, Legacy FC and Juja Founders, with each team contributing to a vibrant and competitive sporting atmosphere.

Following the preliminary rounds, Destiny Veterans, Pamoja Legends, Kiambu Elites and Legacy FC advanced to the semi-finals after impressive performances.

As the tournament enters its knockout stage, organizers say the event is not only about determining a champion but also about creating friendships, encouraging teamwork and inspiring young people through sport.

“The semi-finals promise exciting football full of adrenaline for the fans. Every team has worked hard to get this far and we expect very competitive matches as they fight for a place in the finals,” Dela said.

With the final scheduled for June 21 at Del Monte Local 20, football fans are expected to turn out in large numbers to support their teams and celebrate the spirit of community that the tournament has fostered.

Dela has called on residents, football lovers and stakeholders to attend the remaining matches and support grassroots sports development.

“We invite all football lovers and the community at large to come and support the teams as they interact and network,” he said.
