Infotrak Poll Names Sifuna as Kalonzo’s Preferred Running Mate

By Beatrice Mose

As Kenya’s political landscape gradually shifts toward the 2027 General Election, the race is no longer just about who will lead the opposition — it is also about who will stand beside the flag bearer.

A new Infotrak survey has placed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna at the top of the list of preferred running mates for Kalonzo Musyoka should the opposition unite behind a single presidential candidate.

The findings have sparked fresh discussions on coalition politics, regional balance and leadership succession as opposition leaders continue negotiations aimed at presenting a formidable challenge to President William Ruto in the next General Election.

According to the latest Infotrak poll, Edwin Sifuna emerged as the most preferred deputy presidential candidate for Kalonzo Musyoka in a united opposition, ahead of several prominent political figures.

Presenting the survey findings, Infotrak stated:

“Edwin Sifuna emerges as the most preferred running mate for Kalonzo Musyoka in a united opposition.”

The survey comes at a critical moment when opposition leaders are intensifying consultations on how to consolidate support across the country. While no official coalition has announced its presidential ticket, opinion polls are increasingly shaping public debate on who is best positioned to broaden electoral appeal.

For Sifuna, the survey represents growing national recognition beyond his role as Nairobi Senator and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary-General. Over the past few years, he has established himself as one of the opposition’s most vocal communicators, frequently criticising government policies and defending his party’s position on governance, accountability and the economy.

Kalonzo Musyoka, who finished as runner-up in the latest Infotrak presidential preference poll, has repeatedly expressed his willingness to lead a united opposition coalition. Speaking at various public forums, Kalonzo has maintained that unity among opposition parties is essential to offering Kenyans an alternative government in 2027.

The latest poll also reflects the growing influence of younger leaders within Kenya’s political landscape. Sifuna’s rise in the survey suggests that many respondents view him as a politician capable of complementing a presidential candidate while appealing to urban voters and the youth demographic.

However, opinion polls provide a snapshot of public sentiment at a particular moment and should not be interpreted as election outcomes. Kenya’s political environment remains fluid, with alliances, party negotiations and campaign dynamics likely to evolve significantly before the official campaign period begins.

Should the opposition eventually unite behind Kalonzo Musyoka, the choice of a running mate could prove decisive in determining its competitiveness against the incumbent administration. Coalition leaders will be expected to weigh electoral considerations, governance credentials and political partnerships in selecting the candidate who best strengthens their ticket.
