On April 21, 2024, tragedy struck on Lake Baringo as a boat departed from Salabani Beach in the southeastern region, bound for a church on Central Island. Despite its intended journey, the boat tragically capsized midwater.
The boat was carrying 23 individuals at the time of the accident. Fortunately, 17 individuals were successfully rescued, but sadly, one person later succumbed to the ordeal.
In response to this devastating situation, a collaborative search and recovery effort was initiated by the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) in partnership with various agencies. These included the County Government of Baringo, the Kenya Coast Guard Service, the Kenya Wildlife Service, the Kenya Red Cross, the Lake Baringo Boat Owners Association, Beach Management Units, and the local community. Together, they worked tirelessly to retrieve the bodies of the six missing passengers from the ill-fated boat.
An investigation into the cause of the accident is currently underway.
Speaking about the incident, KMA Director General Eng Martin Dzombo Munga emphasized the importance of adhering to maritime safety regulations. He urged all boat owners and operators to strictly comply with these regulations, emphasizing that ensuring compliance is crucial for safeguarding the lives of passengers and preventing further tragedies.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this heartbreaking incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time,” said Dzombo.
