Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has launched a Sh293 million irrigation project in Kigumo Constituency, Murang’a County, aimed at boosting agricultural production, improving household incomes and strengthening food security.
The Kinyona-Karinga Irrigation Project, launched on Friday, October 9, 2026, is expected to benefit 1,500 households by providing water for year-round farming across 750 acres.
The project will support the cultivation of high-value crops, including vegetables, avocados, bananas, tomatoes and French beans, giving farmers an opportunity to increase production beyond reliance on rain-fed agriculture.
Speaking during the launch in Kinyona, Kindiki said irrigation was central to improving food security, creating employment and accelerating economic development through agriculture.
“Irrigation is crucial to boosting food security, creating jobs, enhancing farmer incomes and accelerating economic development,” Kindiki said.

The project is expected to raise annual earnings to an average of Sh250,000 per acre once fully operational, potentially providing participating farmers with a more reliable source of income.
By enabling farmers to grow crops throughout the year, the initiative is also expected to improve agricultural productivity and create opportunities for increased commercial farming in the area.
The investment comes amid efforts to expand irrigation infrastructure and promote high-value crop production as part of the government’s broader agricultural transformation agenda.
Kindiki was accompanied by Lands and Housing Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome, Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina, nominated MP Sabina Chege, Maragua MP Mary Wamaua and nominated Senator Veronica Maina.
Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, Members of the County Assembly, grassroots leaders and officials from the National Irrigation Authority also attended the launch.
The project’s implementation will be key to determining how quickly the targeted households can access irrigation water and realise the projected increase in farm incomes.
