Mount Kenya Politics: Latest Developments Ahead of 2027

Mount Kenya has emerged as one of the most closely watched political battlegrounds ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election, with competing political formations seeking to control the region’s vote and influence the national presidential contest.

The latest developments point to a region undergoing significant political realignment, with Rigathi Gachagua, Ndindi Nyoro, President William Ruto and a number of smaller parties positioning themselves for influence.

Gachagua Seeks to Consolidate Mount Kenya

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has increasingly positioned himself as a central figure in the political realignment in Mount Kenya.

Gachagua, who leads the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), has been conducting consultations across the region while pushing for a stronger political voice for Mount Kenya ahead of 2027.

He has also rejected the possibility of returning to an alliance with President William Ruto, arguing that the region needs an independent political direction.

Gachagua has previously claimed that Mount Kenya could mobilise about 7.1 million votes for a united opposition in 2027, highlighting the importance he attaches to the region’s voting bloc.

Ndindi Nyoro’s Move Changes the Political Equation

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro’s decision to leave UDA and take over the People’s Party of Kenya (PPK) has introduced another major dynamic into Mount Kenya politics.

Nyoro has declared that he intends to work with opposition leaders and has begun positioning his political vehicle as part of the wider effort to challenge Ruto in 2027.

His move has generated debate over whether he could emerge as an alternative political centre in the region or become part of a broader opposition coalition.

The development has also triggered speculation about whether Nyoro could eventually reconcile with Ruto. Naivasha MP Jayne Kihara recently suggested that the President could still consider Nyoro as a potential running mate for the 2027 election.

Ruto Still Targeting Mount Kenya Support

President William Ruto’s political strategy in Mount Kenya remains another major factor.

Ruto secured significant support from the region in the 2022 election, but the relationship between his administration and some Mount Kenya leaders has deteriorated since then.

Gachagua has accused Ruto of using smaller political parties to divide the Mount Kenya vote, arguing that competing political vehicles could prevent the region from consolidating behind one political formation.

Ruto’s allies, however, have dismissed the idea that the creation of new parties will automatically determine how Mount Kenya voters behave in 2027.

Another important development is the attempt by smaller Mount Kenya political parties to establish a common political platform.

About 30 parties were expected to participate in consultations aimed at consolidating the region’s political strength ahead of the election.

The parties involved include Usawa Party, Safina, The Service Party (TSP), Agano, Social Democratic Party, Ubuntu, Alliance Party, Jibebe, Democratic Party, Kenya Reform Party, Farmers Party and Devolution Party, among others.

The consultations illustrate the growing realisation among smaller parties that their influence could increase if they coordinate rather than compete against one another.

The East-West Question

One of the major issues shaping Mount Kenya politics is the possibility of a political divide between Mount Kenya East and Mount Kenya West.

Different leaders and parties are attempting to establish influence across the region, while some politicians are warning against fragmentation.

The outcome could have national implications because presidential candidates will need to secure substantial support in the region while also building coalitions across other parts of Kenya.
