Minister of Foreign Affairs Musalia Mudavadi is attempting to shine within the Kenya First administration while strategizing politically ahead of 2027 and the 2032 presidential succession race.
Having entered politics at a young age of 29 in 1989, Mudavadi essentially holds the most experience among officials in President William Ruto’s government.
Moreover, the Foreign Affairs Minister has built a reputation as a non-controversial leader with insightful ideas within the Kenya First government.
Mudavadi resigned from his position as Leader of the Amani National Congress (ANC) in October 2022 after being appointed Chief Cabinet Secretary (PCS). This is in accordance with Article 77(2) of the Constitution.
He has been at the forefront of campaigns to support President Ruto’s bid to ensure that opposition leader Raila Odinga wins the chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC).
The former Deputy Prime Minister recently surprised his supporters by hinting at the possibility of another “political earthquake” similar to when he joined President Ruto’s camp before the 2022 general elections.
Additionally, he hinted at a new plan to strengthen the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, suggesting the dissolution of ANC for members to join the party led by President Ruto.
Yesterday, it was reported that various ANC factions have begun “in-depth discussions regarding joining UDA” to prepare guidelines for the process.
The ANC Council, responsible for the party’s political affairs, and the second most influential body after the National Delegates Conference (NDC), are expected to commence discussions on the matter “soon.”
According to the Registrar of Political Parties, a coalition or merger of two or more parties can come together to form a new party or an existing one (such as UDA).
This is after the party follows its constitution and procedures to reach such a decision to merge with another party.
The coalition agreement is signed and deposited in the registrar’s office within 21 days of signing.
This action removes the registration certificate of the parties that have merged. Then, within seven days, an announcement is published in the government’s official gazette about the dissolution of those parties.
A registration certificate is issued to the new political party formed, making members of the merged party automatically members of the new party.
The President, Deputy President, Governors, Senators, Members of Parliament, and councillors elected on the tickets of the parties that merged will continue to hold their positions until their terms expire.
Mudavadi’s recent statement about the possibility of ANC joining UDA has sparked mixed reactions, with some ANC members opposing the idea.
ANC Secretary General Omboko Milemba, who reassured the party’s supporters last week that it would not be dissolved, appeared to change his stance yesterday.
He explained that he initially opposed the proposal before consulting with Mudavadi, the ANC founder, about future plans and potential benefits.
“I am confident that he will call me and we will discuss this issue and his plans because I am a partner in those plans,” Milemba, who is also the Emuhaya Member of Parliament, told Taifa Leo over the phone.
He added, “At this time, I have not received any instructions regarding this matter; maybe you know more than me. However, once I receive instructions, I will present them transparently.”
