Rigathi Gachagua Calls for Swift Probe Into Gilgil School Fire Tragedy

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called for urgent reforms in disaster preparedness and school safety systems following the tragic dormitory fire at Utumishi Girls Academy that left several students dead and others injured.

In a statement, Gachagua expressed deep sorrow over the early morning incident, describing it as a painful reminder of gaps in emergency planning and response within learning institutions.

He said the tragedy, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, should never have happened in modern-day Kenya, noting that the loss of young lives has deeply shaken the nation.

“I pass my deepest sympathies to the parents and families who have lostv their young promising daughters of our great nation. Please accept my deepest sympathies and my prayers for you,’Gacahgau said in a statement.

The former Deputy President called for thorough and speedy investigations into the cause of the fire, insisting that any individuals found culpable through acts of commission or omission must be held fully accountable under the law.

He further emphasized the need for government and institutions to integrate disaster preparedness into national planning, rather than treating emergencies as reactive events after tragedies occur.

Gachagua also extended his condolences to bereaved families, terming the victims “young promising daughters of the nation,” while wishing injured students a quick recovery.

The fire at the Gilgil-based school has triggered nationwide concern, with authorities continuing investigations and rescue operations as the country grapples with the scale of the tragedy.
