Safaricom, Sprite Empower 500 Pwani University Students with Digital Skills

It was a significant opportunity for more than 500 students from Pwani University as Safaricom, in partnership with Sprite, hosted the Hook’d on Fresh” content creation masterclass on Friday, aimed at driving digital empowerment among young people.

The high-energy session brought together leading digital creators and industry experts, offering students practical insights into the creator economy.

Through engaging conversations and live demonstrations, students discovered how to leverage social media platforms, build personal brands, and monetize their content into sustainable income streams.

“I have always owned a smartphone and occasionally made TikTok videos, but I never knew how to make money from my content. Today’s session has been an eye-opener for many of us here who have always aspired to earn from our creativity. Going forward, my content will not just be for entertainment, it will also be a source of income and help me support myself instead of relying on my parents for pocket money. I am also happy that Safaricom has provided us with affordable S-Hook bundles to keep us, as young people, connected and share our content,” said Alfred Fondo, a Computer Science student at Pwani University.

Beyond content creation, participants were also equipped with essential financial literacy skills, including saving and investing their earnings to support long-term financial stability and wealth creation.

Key industry players, including Tileh Pacbro, Rono, Juma Shibe, and Vallery, took to the stage to share practical tips on transforming online passion into profit, spanning from social media trends to financial success.

In addition, Phelister Wanjiru from Safaricom’s Wealth Management team introduced the Ziidi Money Market Fund, encouraging students to adopt smart saving habits as a foundation for future wealth creation.

“Content creation is huge for youth today, and through S-Hook, we are proud to empower them and equipping their passion with the platforms and tools to turn it into real livelihoods,” said Fawzia Ali Kimanthi, Chief Consumer Business Officer, Safaricom.

The Hook’d on Fresh campaign is a digital influencer-led creator programme designed to equip Kenyan youth with the skills, tools, and inspiration needed to thrive in the digital content economy.

The Pwani University edition builds on previous activations at Africa Nazarene University, the University of Eldoret, and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, where hundreds of students have benefited from access to digital tools and industry insights.

At its core, the initiative reflects a shared commitment by Safaricom and Sprite to empower Kenya’s creative generation by blending connectivity and culture, two essential drivers of success in today’s digital landscape.

The Hook’d on Fresh Masterclass Series continues to go beyond content creation, integrating skills development with financial literacy to position young people to better navigate and succeed in the digital economy.
