Healthcare in Vihiga County has received a major boost following the Ministry of Health’s support in partnership with Safaricom’s M-Pesa Foundation.

The ministry is overseeing the construction of an Integrated Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Health Complex, fully sponsored and equipped through the foundation.

The KSh 60 million project, inspected by a delegation led by Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale, will feature a theatre, newborn unit, kangaroo room, labour ward, delivery room, and postnatal ward.

Once completed, the facility is expected to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality while providing quality healthcare services to over 700,000 residents in Vihiga and neighbouring counties.

The delegation also toured the Vihiga County Referral Hospital, which is undergoing significant upgrades. A new six-floor Hospital Plaza is under construction and will house an ICU, renal unit, six theatres, and specialized wards.

The facility is projected to transform the county into a hub for specialized healthcare, medical training, and research.

CS Duale also convened a strategic sensitization caucus with county healthcare providers, where he distributed 608 digital devices to enhance digital health transformation.

He further announced that Vihiga will benefit from the National Equipment Services Programme (NESP), ensuring access to advanced medical equipment in radiology, operating theatres, and intensive care units.

“Our mission remains clear—to make Universal Health Coverage (UHC) a reality,” said Hon. Duale. “With the Social Health Authority (SHA) providing a foundation for sustainable healthcare financing, we are committed to delivering quality and equitable healthcare for all Kenyans.”
