Why People’s Movement Party Could Emerge as a Rival to Gachagua Ahead of 2027

The emergence of the People’s Movement Party could add a new layer to Kenya’s increasingly competitive opposition politics ahead of the 2027 General Election, potentially creating another centre of political influence outside Rigathi Gachagua’s growing camp.

Gachagua, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader and former Deputy President, has increasingly presented himself as a leading figure in the opposition’s effort to challenge President William Ruto in 2027.

He has also maintained that he is well positioned to lead a united opposition into the election, a position that could put him at the centre of negotiations over the opposition presidential ticket.

However, the opposition camp is far from settled.

Recent disagreements among opposition principals have exposed concerns over the balance of power within the alliance, including fears that Gachagua and DCP could gain disproportionate influence over the wider opposition.

It is in this environment that the People’s Movement Party could find room to grow.

A New Political Vehicle

The party could appeal to politicians and voters who support an opposition challenge to Ruto but are not necessarily prepared to rally behind Gachagua.

That distinction could become important as the 2027 contest approaches.

For Gachagua, building a broad coalition is likely to require convincing leaders from different regions and political formations that his leadership can accommodate their interests.

For the People’s Movement Party, the opportunity could be to position itself as an alternative political vehicle within the broader opposition movement.

Battle for the Opposition Vote

The biggest potential threat from the party may not be an immediate attempt to defeat Gachagua at the presidential level.

Instead, its importance could come from its ability to attract political actors, grassroots supporters and younger voters who are looking for an alternative to established political personalities.

Kenya’s opposition has already struggled to agree on how and when to settle on a single presidential candidate for 2027. Some opposition leaders have expressed reservations about the process and the possibility of one individual dominating the coalition.

A stronger People’s Movement Party could therefore complicate efforts to consolidate the opposition behind Gachagua.

Karua Factor

The party has also gained attention following former Justice Minister Martha Karua’s public congratulations after its official launch.

Karua welcomed the emergence of the new political movement and said democracy benefits when different ideas compete for the trust of citizens.

Her remarks give the party additional political visibility at a time when opposition leaders are exploring different ways of organising themselves ahead of 2027.

Karua herself has remained part of the wider opposition conversation, amid continuing discussions over how the various political formations can work together.

Gachagua’s Mt Kenya Challenge

Another important factor is the battle for political influence in the Mt Kenya region.

Gachagua has been working to consolidate support in the region while simultaneously expanding his appeal beyond his traditional political base.

A rival political vehicle capable of attracting some of the same voters could complicate that strategy.

The former Deputy President has already warned against attempts to divide the Mt Kenya vote, highlighting the sensitivity surrounding competing political formations in the region.

If the People’s Movement Party develops a credible grassroots network, it could force Gachagua to spend more political energy defending his support base while seeking votes elsewhere.

The Youth Question

The party could also seek to capitalise on growing demand for new political leadership, particularly among younger voters.

A political formation that presents itself as a break from traditional party politics could appeal to voters who feel disconnected from established political structures.

However, converting that appeal into actual electoral strength will require more than a launch.

The party would need strong grassroots structures, recognisable national leaders, financial resources and candidates capable of competing in constituencies across the country.

Could PMP Really Rival Gachagua?

For now, it would be premature to describe the People’s Movement Party as a direct challenger to Gachagua.

The DCP leader already has a significant national profile, an established political base and a clear presidential ambition.

But the political significance of PMP could lie elsewhere.

If it attracts influential leaders, establishes a strong grassroots presence and becomes part of negotiations over the opposition presidential ticket, it could emerge as a serious power broker ahead of 2027.

The bigger question may therefore not be whether PMP can defeat Gachagua outright, but whether it can become strong enough that Gachagua cannot ignore it.

With the opposition still struggling to settle its leadership question, every emerging political formation could alter the balance of power.

And as the 2027 election approaches, the battle may not only be between Ruto and the opposition—it could also be over who controls the opposition itself.
