Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has pledged to officially hand over the Nessuit market within a month, saying construction of the facility is 99 per cent complete as the government expands trading infrastructure in Nakuru County.
Speaking during a public engagement rally in Nessuit Township, Njoro Constituency, on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Kindiki said the market was among three modern facilities being constructed in the constituency to improve working conditions for small-scale traders.
“Nessuit ESP Market is 99 per cent complete. In the next one month, I will be back here to officially hand over the market,” Kindiki said.
He added that construction of the Mauche and Kihingo markets was also nearing completion, with the government planning to develop additional facilities in Njoro because many residents depend on farming for their livelihoods.
The Nessuit market is being constructed at a cost of Sh55 million, while Mauche and Kihingo markets are costing Sh56 million and Sh65 million, respectively.
Kindiki said the projects were intended to address the difficult conditions faced by traders who conduct business in open spaces exposed to mud, dust and rain.
“This is the government that is removing the shame small-scale traders have endured while conducting business in muddy, dusty and rainy conditions,” he said.
Across Nakuru County, 25 modern markets are under construction at a cumulative cost of Sh2.3 billion, while four additional markets are planned at an estimated cost of Sh715 million.
The projects form part of a broader government programme combining market development with affordable housing and institutional accommodation. Kindiki said Nakuru had received Sh47 billion for housing-related investments, including markets, hostels and institutional housing.
The Deputy President also linked the market projects to the government’s economic agenda, arguing that development should benefit ordinary citizens, including small-scale traders and farmers.
“We said during the campaign period that work is work, whether small or big,” he said.
Kindiki urged political leaders to focus on development policies and their records in office rather than personal attacks as the country approaches the 2027 General Election.
He maintained that leaders should explain what they had done to improve roads, electricity access and market infrastructure in the areas they represented.
The planned handover of the Nessuit market will mark the next stage of the project, although the Deputy President did not announce a specific date for the ceremony.
