The Nyeri High Court on Tuesday sentenced former Kenya Defence Forces Major Peter Mwaura Mugure to life imprisonment for the 2019 murder of his estranged wife and their two young children.
Justice Martin Muya convicted Mugure on three counts of murder and handed down concurrent life sentences, describing the killings as “barbaric” and “a betrayal of the very people he was duty-bound to protect.”
Mugure, who previously served at Laikipia Air Base, was found guilty of killing Joyce Syombua Maua, 31, her 10-year-old daughter Shanice, and her five-year-old son, Prince Michael.
The court heard that the murders stemmed from a child support dispute. Syombua had obtained a court order compelling Mugure to pay KSh25,000 per month in upkeep. Prosecutors said Mugure complied only once before luring the family from Nairobi and killing them. Their bodies were later discovered dumped in Thigithu Estate.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Muya said the crime was committed in cold blood and reflected a growing trend of gender-based violence and femicide in the country.
“This court cannot and will not condone acts that extinguish innocent lives, especially those of children and a woman seeking nothing more than support for her family,” the judge said. “The sentence must reflect the gravity of the offence and send a message that such barbaric acts have no place in our society.”
In court, Mugure appeared in a dark green jacket over a patterned shirt. He showed no remorse during the proceedings and told the court that he intended to appeal both the conviction and the sentence.
“I have instructed my advocates not to challenge the legality or severity of whatever sentence you impose on me, but to challenge only the convictions.”
The case has drawn public attention amid ongoing national conversations about domestic violence and femicide. Human rights groups have cited it as an example of how financial disputes can escalate into deadly violence when legal mechanisms fail to protect victims.
Justice Muya ordered that Mugure serve his life sentences concurrently. He will remain in custody pending his appeal.
