Government Rewards KPA Staff, Board for Outstanding Performance

By James Kamau

The Government has rewarded the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Board and staff after the Authority earned a “Very Good” rating in the 2023/2024 Performance Contracting cycle.

The recognition follows KPA’s strong performance in improving efficiency and supporting Kenya’s growing maritime sector.

Speaking at the Inland Container Depot (ICD) Nairobi, Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir announced that KPA attained an overall rating of “Very Good” with a composite score of 2.9697 points during the 20th Performance Contracting cycle for the 2023/2024 financial year.

“Excellence is not measured by promises but by results. KPA has shown that commitment, discipline and innovation can transform public service into a driver of national growth. This recognition is a challenge to aim even higher and keep Kenya’s ports among the best in Africa,” said Chirchir.

The Cabinet Secretary said President Dr. William Ruto had directed that the KPA Board and staff be rewarded in recognition of their measurable achievements under the performance contracting framework.

He congratulated the Board, management and employees for their outstanding dedication, which earned the Authority national recognition.

Chirchir praised KPA for the continued growth in cargo volumes at the Port of Mombasa and the Port of Lamu despite global challenges that have affected the maritime industry.

He noted that disruptions linked to the Red Sea crisis and tensions in the Middle East had affected international shipping and trade, but KPA remained resilient and competitive.

The Cabinet Secretary further commended KPA for attaining internationally recognized occupational health and safety management certification.

He said the achievements demonstrate the Authority’s commitment to sustainability, workplace safety and world-class service delivery.

Chirchir encouraged employees to remain focused on delivering quality services to customers and stakeholders, saying operational excellence is key to positioning Kenya as the leading maritime and logistics hub in East and Central Africa.

KPA Chief Executive Officer Capt. William Ruto thanked the Government for creating a conducive business environment and praised the Board and staff for their commitment to efficiency and service delivery.

He said the Authority will continue implementing modernization programmes, expanding digital services and improving customer-focused operations to facilitate trade and enhance the competitiveness of Kenya’s ports.
