A family in Narumoru is mourning the loss of their son, Carlos Brown, aged two years and nine months, who died following a tragic incident involving a school bus at Shalom School.
Carlos had boarded the school bus on the morning of June 8 as he did on every school day. His parents say they bid him goodbye that morning, unaware it would be the last time they would see their only child alive.
Shortly after the bus arrived at the school, Carlos’s mother, Hanna Wambui, received a phone call from one of the teachers informing her that there was an emergency involving her son. She says she was not given details about what had happened and immediately rushed to the school.
His father, Baptista Mukere, said he later contacted another teacher, who directed the family to Narumoru Level 4 Hospital. Upon arrival, the family says they waited for approximately 30 minutes without receiving an explanation before learning that their son had died.
“I found my child already dead with an injury on the head. I asked, ‘What happened to my child?’ He was already dead, and no one answered me,” Mukere said.
According to the school’s head teacher, the child was accidentally struck after walking behind the school bus, where the driver was unable to see him.
However, Mukere said the account he later received from police officers differed from the explanation given by the school, with officers allegedly indicating that the child had been struck by the front wheel of the vehicle after moving in front of the bus.
The differing accounts have left the family seeking clarity on the circumstances surrounding the incident and calling for a comprehensive investigation to establish exactly what happened.
The parents also say they felt abandoned during the ordeal, alleging that they were left waiting outside the school premises without adequate information or support following the incident.
Holding back tears, Mukere described the pain of losing his only child.
“He was my only child. I don’t even know what I’ll do now. I used to wait for my child every evening after school. Now, who will I be waiting for?” he said.
The family is now appealing for justice and says it hopes investigations by the relevant authorities will establish the facts surrounding the tragedy and ensure accountability where necessary.
