Former MP Ngunjiri Wambugu Accuses Gachagua of ‘Cannibalising’ Jubilee Aspirants in Mt Kenya

Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has accused former deputy president  Rigathi Gachagua of deliberately weakening the Jubilee Party by recruiting its aspirants in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a statement shared in his social media , Wambugu claimed that several Jubilee candidates who contested in the 2022 polls in constituencies including Kirinyaga Central, Limuru, Mwea, Mukurweini, Othaya, and Kieni have defected to Gachagua’s  party.

He alleged that the strategy is aimed at building a new political outfit by “cannibalising” Jubilee’s existing support base in the Mt Kenya region.

“He intends to cannibalize #Jubilee to build his Party. Which is why I have a problem with my DPL,” Ngunjiri said.

Wambugu further questioned the political goodwill being extended to Gachagua by Jubilee Deputy Party leader Fred Matiang’i , claiming that while opposition leaders project unity, Jubilee aspirants are being quietly approached and persuaded to join another party.

” As #Matiangi continues to hang around happily with Jofri and show him goodwill, Jofri is using that opportunity to identify our Jubilee aspirants in Mt Kenya & then go back to them behind Matiangi’s back & ‘invite’ them to his Party. (I am sure he tells them – ‘we have agreed with Matiangi that my party will be the only one that will field candidates in Mt Kenya in 2027’).”Ngunjiri said.

He maintained that the recent defections raises concerns about whether Jubilee will eventually cede its planned electoral positions in the region to Gachagua’s party in the run-up to the 2027 elections.

“Essentially Jofri is building his party by destroying Jubilee; literally fishing from the basket that someone else has already caught/ Meanwhile we are all here insisting ‘we are all working together in the United opposition!, ‘He said.

Wambugu said he is now waiting for an official response from the Jubilee leadership regarding the alleged defections and the party’s strategy moving forward.
