Governor Nassir Unveils Reforms to Improve Early Childhood Education

By:Lewis Macharia

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has unveiled a series of reforms aimed at strengthening Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) across the county.

Speaking during the launch, Governor Nassir said early learning plays a critical role in shaping a child’s future, noting that many ECDE centres have struggled with teacher shortages, poor infrastructure, and inadequate learning materials.

To address these challenges, the county government has recruited 130 new ECDE teachers, a move expected to ease overcrowding in classrooms and improve the quality of instruction.

The county has also expanded its free school feeding programme, which now benefits more than 12,000 learners in public ECDE centres. The initiative is designed to boost school attendance and enhance concentration among young learners.

In addition, the county is upgrading school infrastructure through the “Ondoa Mabati” programme, which seeks to replace temporary iron-sheet classrooms with permanent, safe learning facilities. Several ECDE centres are currently under construction, with some nearing completion.

Governor Nassir said the reforms demonstrate the county’s commitment to investing in early education. Parents and teachers have welcomed the initiative, saying it will improve learning conditions and provide children with a strong foundation for the future.
