Kenya Extends Regularization Window for Burundian Nationals

The Government of Kenya has extended the regularization window for Burundian nationals to 90 days as part of efforts to address humanitarian concerns and ensure an orderly and dignified process for all affected foreign nationals.

The decision was announced following a high-level coordination meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, bringing together key government and humanitarian partners to discuss the situation of Burundian nationals in Kenya.

The meeting was attended by Her Excellency Ambassador Evelyne Habonimana of Burundi, UNHCR Kenya Representative H.E. Fatima Mohammed-Cole, and IOM Kenya Representative H.E. Nomagugu Ncube.

The discussions focused on strengthening coordination, addressing emerging humanitarian needs, and ensuring that all processes involving foreign nationals are conducted with respect for their safety, dignity and rights.

The Government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding all foreign nationals in Kenya and emphasized that harassment or mistreatment will not be tolerated.

“Kenya remains committed to ensuring that every process is conducted in a manner that upholds human dignity, protects safety and promotes regional cooperation. Any return exercise will be strictly voluntary, informed and transparently recorded,” officials said.

The extension of the regularization period is expected to give Burundian nationals additional time to meet the necessary requirements while allowing government agencies and humanitarian organizations to coordinate their support effectively.

An active Joint Task Team is also being constituted to address emerging issues, strengthen coordination and provide timely responses to concerns arising during the process.

The initiative reflects the spirit of East African cooperation, with Kenya, Burundi and international humanitarian partners working together to promote a coordinated, humane and orderly approach.

The Government has reiterated that the welfare and protection of affected individuals remain at the centre of the ongoing coordination efforts.
