Kenya has taken a major step towards transforming Jomo Kenyatta International Airport after the government witnessed the signing of the engineer-consultant contract for the airport’s modernisation project.
The agreement appoints Dar Al-Handasah as the lead consultant to provide technical oversight for the proposed design, development and modernisation of JKIA.
Under the contract, the consultancy firm will be responsible for design review, project management, contract administration and construction supervision throughout the implementation phase of the project.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir described the agreement as a significant milestone in efforts to position Kenya as a leading aviation hub on the continent.
“This marks the beginning of a critical implementation phase as we accelerate the delivery of a modern JKIA that will strengthen Kenya’s position as Africa’s premier aviation gateway and regional air cargo hub,” Chirchir said.
He noted that the consultant’s expertise would be instrumental in delivering a modern, efficient, safe and sustainable airport capable of meeting international standards.
“Their expertise will be instrumental in delivering a modern, efficient, safe and sustainable airport that meets global standards,” he added.
JKIA remains the busiest airport in East and Central Africa and serves as a crucial hub for both passenger and cargo traffic across the region. The planned modernisation is expected to ease congestion, improve passenger experience and upgrade facilities to accommodate growing demand.
Chirchir said the investment would also deliver broader economic benefits beyond aviation.
“Beyond enhancing passenger experience and operational efficiency, this investment will boost trade, tourism and connectivity while creating new opportunities for economic growth and job creation,” he said.
The signing signals a shift from planning to implementation, with the consultant now expected to review designs, manage project timelines, administer contracts and supervise construction to ensure quality and compliance with international standards.
Aviation stakeholders have for years called for the expansion and modernisation of JKIA to match its status as one of Africa’s leading aviation gateways. Congestion, ageing infrastructure and capacity constraints have frequently been cited as challenges affecting efficiency and Kenya’s competitiveness in the global aviation sector.
With Dar Al-Handasah now on board, the government says the focus will be on developing a facility that is not only larger but also smarter, safer and more sustainable, with greater emphasis on energy efficiency, advanced safety systems and technology integration in line with global best practices.
