The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has reminded Kenyans that only authorized individuals are permitted inside polling stations during elections, saying the measure is critical to safeguarding the integrity, transparency and security of the voting process.
According to the Commission, those allowed access to polling stations include registered voters, polling clerks, presiding officers, security personnel, accredited election observers, accredited media representatives, political party or independent candidate agents, and authorized IEBC staff.
In a public advisory, the electoral body said limiting access to accredited individuals helps ensure that voting takes place in an orderly, peaceful and accountable environment.
“Authorized persons at the polling station include voters, polling clerks, presiding officers, security personnel, accredited observers, accredited media, political party or independent candidate agents and IEBC staff,” the Commission stated.
IEBC noted that restricting access to authorized personnel helps prevent unnecessary interference with the electoral process while allowing independent observation and media coverage that enhance transparency and public confidence.
Accredited observers play an important role in monitoring compliance with electoral laws and procedures, while accredited media keep the public informed on developments during the voting exercise. Political party and independent candidate agents, meanwhile, observe voting and vote-counting processes on behalf of their respective candidates and parties.
Election experts have long argued that clearly defining who is permitted inside polling stations minimizes disruptions and strengthens confidence in the electoral process by ensuring that election procedures are conducted in accordance with the law.
Security personnel are tasked with maintaining peace and order at polling centres, while presiding officers and polling clerks oversee the administration of voting activities and the management of election materials.
The Commission also urged members of the public to rely on official communication channels for election-related information in order to avoid misinformation and unverified reports.
“For accurate, timely and verified election information, visit our official website and follow our verified social media platforms,” IEBC advised.
The reminder forms part of the Commission’s ongoing voter education campaign aimed at enhancing public awareness and strengthening confidence in Kenya’s democratic processes.
IEBC has encouraged all stakeholders to familiarize themselves with electoral regulations and respect the rules governing polling stations, emphasizing that cooperation among voters, election officials, political parties, security agencies, observers and the media is essential to delivering peaceful, transparent and credible elections.
