President William Ruto is facing fresh political tension after Maendeleo Chap Chap party leader Alfred Mutua dramatically rejected pressure to dissolve his party into the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), choosing instead to remain independent ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The decision has sparked quiet political shock within Kenya Kwanza circles, coming at a time when UDA is pushing for a more unified structure to strengthen its grip going into the next election cycle.
The move effectively kills growing speculation that MCC was on the verge of being absorbed into UDA as part of a wider strategy to consolidate Ruto’s political base.
“While the party is aware that some political parties within the Kenya Kwanza Coalition have chosen to dissolve and merge into the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), Maendeleo Chap Chap has made a deliberate and democratic decision to remain a fully independent political party within the Coalition,” Mutua said.
Despite the strong wording, Mutua maintained that the party still supports President Ruto’s leadership and will back his re-election bid in 2027 — a position that now places MCC in a delicate “loyal but independent” political zone.
But behind the scenes, analysts say the decision exposes a growing silent rift in Kenya Kwanza, where affiliate parties are increasingly resisting full absorption into UDA as 2027 approaches.
Political observers warn that this could complicate Ruto’s long-term strategy of building a single dominant ruling party, as competing interests begin to emerge within the coalition.
Some analysts argue the move could lead to fragmented campaigning, with allied parties potentially fielding rival candidates under the same coalition umbrella — weakening UDA’s dominance on the ground.
While MCC insists it remains loyal to Kenya Kwanza, the political message is clear: not everyone in Ruto’s camp is ready to surrender their political identity.
