As the clock ticks towards the 2022 general election, the race to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta as Mt Kenya region kingpin has started gaining momentum.
The anatomy of the succession tussle tips off a supremacy fight pitting the current crop of governors against their predecessors, as well as serving MPs and ex-lawmakers still holding sway in the region.
Among the leaders who have declared interest in the position of region spokesperson includes ex-Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri, outgoing Murang’a governor Mwangi Wa Iria, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru.
Others in the list include former Kiambu governor William Kabogo, former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth, former Justice minister and Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua and National assembly speaker Justin Muturi.
In May this year, National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi is was crowned as Mt Kenya spokesman in a divisive ceremony that triggered the physical confrontation.
Muturi’s coronation triggered a debate on the political future of the Mt Kenya region, which is divided along party lines and personal interests.
Though some governors are against Muturi’s coronation county bosses from Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Meru counties have thrown their weight behind the National Assembly speaker.
The new power tussle comes at a time when Uhuru’s grip on the region seems to be waning amid questions whether he would have any wherewithal by 2022 to influence his succession.
Political analysts argue that Muturi’s coronation was just ceremonial as he hasn’t been directing the region’s politics.
About two months ago, the Mount Kenya Unity forum appointed Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua as region spokesperson ahead of 2022.
Present at the Naivasha meeting during the coronation of Karua were, former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo and Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, Mwangi Kiunjuri, Moses Kuria among others.
It’s after the coronation that Karua and Muturi held an exclusive meeting and vowed to work together in uniting the Mount Kenya region.
During the meeting, Muturi said he was committed to forging a political and economic partnership that will benefit all Kenyans.
Karua offered her support to the Speaker’s bid, adding that she will help rally her supporters behind him in his quest for the presidency.
Mount Kenya MCA caucus chairman Charles Mwangi Ng’ang’a has told the people daily digital that both Karua and Muturi are playing to keep them afloat ahead of 2022.
Ichagaki as popularly known said that, president Uhuru Kenyatta is a legitimate region spokesperson.
He said that the Mount Kenya region is fully behind President Uhuru Kenyatta and they will follow his command ahead of 2022.
“Don’t listen to voices in the street that who or who is Mount Kenya spokesperson. We are fully behind Uhuru Kenyatta,” Ichagaki said.
Party of Democratic Unity (PDU), national chairman Isaiah Gichu has said that Karua was only appointed as the Mount Kenya unity forum spokesperson.
He said that the forum comprises more than 7 political parties and they are championing the unity of the region.
“Karua is the spokesperson of Mount Kenya unity forum but not Mount Kenya region,” Gichu said.
The latest political opinion poll has shown that Narc-Kenya party leader Martha Karua is the best politician from Mt Kenya to deputies any of the many presidential aspirants in the 2022 General Election.
The poll was conducted in the Mt Kenya region, considered the biggest swing vote area that will determine who becomes Kenya’s 5th president after August 2022.
From the poll, 10.6% of Mt Kenya residents believe that Martha Karua, recently crowned as Mt Kenya spokesperson, is the best politician that all presidential contestants should be wooing.
