Newsline Media Pushes for Industry-Ready Graduates Through Practical Learning

University stakeholders across the country have been urged to strengthen practical training for media and film students to ensure they graduate with industry-ready skills.

Speaking during an interview, Miss Faith Mukundi, Managing Director of Newsline Media and Training Agency, said there is a growing need to align academic training with real-world media demands through hands-on exposure across key industry fields.

She emphasized that the institution is committed to equipping students with technical and practical competencies that reflect current job market requirements, helping bridge the gap between classroom theory and industry expectations.

“It is necessary that whatever is learnt in theory needs to be practical,” she said.

Mukundi noted that Newsline Media focuses on empowering young professionals through mentorship, practical training, and structured attachment programmes designed to connect academic learning with professional experience.

She said the agency offers attachment opportunities in media production, journalism, film and video production, public relations, graphic design, information technology, animation, and cyber security, giving students exposure to diverse digital and communication-driven careers.

She observed that the rapid growth of digital media has made information more accessible and has significantly reshaped how content is created and consumed, particularly through citizen journalism.

However, she pointed out that a lack of adequate practical resources in universities and colleges remains a major challenge, limiting the number of students who can be effectively exposed to production environments.

“This limits the number of students that can be enrolled for a single programme at our centre, forcing us to further postpone our subsequent intake,” she said.

Mukundi also acknowledged initial challenges faced during the establishment of the attachment centre, including concerns over public acceptance. Despite this, she noted that the initiative has since trained and impacted more than 200 professionals across various fields in media and communication.
