North Korea Backs Iran’s Selection of Mojtaba Khamenei as Supreme Leader

North Korea has expressed support for Iran following the selection of Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new Supreme Leader.

In a statement issued through state media, the North Korean Foreign Ministry said it respects the decision made by Iran’s leadership institutions in appointing Mojtaba Khamenei to the powerful position that oversees the country’s political, religious and military leadership.

Pyongyang noted that the move reflects the will of the Iranian leadership and people, adding that every sovereign nation has the right to determine its own leadership without external interference.

The announcement came shortly after Iran confirmed Mojtaba Khamenei as the successor to his father, Ali Khamenei, who had led the Islamic Republic for decades.

North Korea also used the opportunity to strongly criticise recent military actions against Iran by United States and Israel, describing the attacks as violations of sovereignty that risk escalating tensions in the Middle East.

According to the statement, such actions threaten regional stability and could lead to further conflict if diplomatic solutions are not prioritised.

Political analysts note that relations between North Korea and Iran have remained relatively close over the years, with both nations often cooperating diplomatically and sharing similar positions in opposition to Western sanctions and influence.
